3 Hong Kong Appoints Ericsson for Messaging Systems Upgrade
Expanded capacity and advanced features uplift service quality

Ericsson and 3 Hong Kong, a subsidiary of Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited, have reached a partnership agreement to enhance and maintain 3 Hong Kong's messaging systems for both 2G and 3G networks.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will upgrade 3 Hong Kong's messaging systems by supplying and installing solutions of higher flexibility and functionality. Along with the systems enhancement, the capacity of the systems will be expanded. Ericsson will also be responsible for the consolidation of the existing messaging systems on 3 Hong Kong's 2G and 3G networks for better operation and cost efficiencies.

Peter Wong, Chief Executive Officer of 3 Hong Kong said, "To uphold our commitment to providing best-in-class mobile multi-media content and services for our customers, 3 Hong Kong incessantly expands and upgrades its mobile networks and systems. The enhancement of our messaging systems is no exception."

"The number of short messages sent in Hong Kong in the past two years recorded an upsurge of around 160% (remark 1). Amid the increasing popularities of SMS and MMS in Hong Kong, our systems upgrade will not only allow us to cater for this rapidly growing service but also manage the service in a more efficient manner. It will also enable us to bring more new services to our customers in the future," continued Wong.

Johan Adler, President of Ericsson Hong Kong said, "We anticipate further growth opportunities for 3 Hong Kong as new mobile services are expected from the end users. This project can support our customer to provide more high-quality and innovative services in a converged environment and ultimately enhance end users' experience."

"We are very excited of 3 Hong Kong's decision to deploy Ericsson solution for the entire 2G/3G messaging systems. This reaffirms our position as a key strategic partner with 3 Hong Kong and proves again our commitment to customer's business development." added Adler.

The project will be completed by mid 2006. The enhanced functionalities after the messaging systems upgrade will improve the delivery time of SMS/MMS messaging during peak hours. The flexible and integrated platform will facilitate launch of WAP push applications and complicated new services such as Video Mail, Fun Greeting, Video Album, Easy Talk, etc.
