of 4G LTE and Wi-Fi to launch VoWi-Fi
service for a smoother voice-calling experience

Seamless handover between VoLTE and VoWi-Fi
facilitates better indoor connectivity for voice calling

Hong Kong, 20 June, 2015 3 Hong Kong, the mobile communications division of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH; stock code: 215), today launched Voice-over-Wi-Fi – to be known as VoWi-Fi – following successful installation and tests.

Customers can make stable high-quality phone calls on designated handsets via any Wi-Fi network in Hong Kong.

VoWi-Fi’s enhancement of indoor coverage now a global industry trend
VoWi-Fi enhances indoor network coverage, in line with a current development trend throughout the world’s mobile communications industry. And research1 forecasts that VoWi-Fi airtime globally will exceed 4 billion minutes in 2018, outstripping use of VoLTE.

HTHKH Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Tan said: “Comprehensive network coverage is the pre-requisite for an excellent mobile communications service, which 3 Hong Kong has achieved. This is especially the case since our 4G LTE launch, plus provision of more than 16,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, making us Hong Kong’s largest-scale Wi-Fi service provider2. We launched VoWi-Fi because we are well aware customers are always looking for a better voice-calling service. This technology enhances indoor voice-calling quality and facilitates seamless handover between VoWi-Fi and VoLTE. The upshot is a significantly better communications experience.”

New value-added voice package delivers hassle-free communications
3 Hong Kong’s VoWi-Fi service is compatible with the most popular smartphone models and is available to all 4G LTE customers on the basis that usage will be measured against service plan entitlement in almost the same way as ordinary voice calls. In fact, 3 Hong Kong has introduced a new value-added voice package that provides an extra 1,000 minutes’ voice usage for just HK$10 per month.

The end result is that customers will enjoy a better communications experience based on better network coverage and a better way of harnessing the combined strengths of 4G LTE and Wi-Fi.
